Citations
There are three methods to cite in-text references. Always check with your instructor as to the preferred method.
- Superscript
- The number corresponds to the placement of the reference list (the list is not alphabetical)
- inserted at the end of the cited information:
- Oscillation in the reaction of benzaldehyde with oxygen was reported previously.¹
- inserted within the cited information:
- The syntheses described by Fraser¹ take advantage of carbohydrate topology.
- Italic Numbers
- The number matches the placement of the reference in the reference list (the list is not alphabetical)
- inserted at the end of the cited information:
- Oscillation in the reaction of benzaldehyde with oxygen was reported previously (1).
- inserted within the cited information:
- The syntheses described by Fraser (1) take advantage of carbohydrate topology.
- Author Name Year of Publication
- Currently not used in ACS Publications
- Use the author's last name, a comma, and the date of publication
- inserted at the end of the cited information:
- The primary structure of this enzyme has also been determined (Finnegan et al., 2004).
- inserted within the cited information:
- According to Harris (2003), drug release is controlled by varying the hydrolytic stability of the ester bond.
- Currently not used in ACS Publications

- If two authors:
- Superscript - Allison and Perez¹
- Author Name Year - (Allison and Perez, 2020)
- If more than two authors:
- Italic Numbers - Williams et al. (1)
- Author Name Year - (Williams et al., 2019)
