A guide to using the citation manager RefWorks
Exporting to RefWorks
The following boxes provide instructions for exporting citation information from popular databases at Iona College Libraries to your RefWorks library.
Exporting from WorldCat
- Disable pop-up blockers in your browser
- Click on the Cite icon
- Select Export to RefWorks
- Check off box Don't ask me this again
- Click on OK button to access the citation
- Follow instructions on Bibliographies & Citations page to finalize your references
Exporting from EBSCO
- After you first open the article, go to Tools on the right-hand side
- Click on Export icon (a piece of paper with a green arrow)
- Select Export to RefWorks
- Click on Save
- Check off box Don't ask me this again
- Click on OK button to access your citation
- Follow instructions on Bibliographies & Citations page to finalize your references
Exporting from ProQuest
- Check the box next to the article(s) you want to export
- Click the Cite icon
- Choose your preferred citation style. If that citation style is MLA, ProQuest currently supports MLA 8th edition citations; the most current MLA citation style is the 9th edition. Pay particular attention when finalizing your MLA references from ProQuest
- Under the full citation, find the Export to a citation manager or file box
- Click on the RefWorks icon
- Assure the system that you are not a robot
- Click on the Continue button at the bottom of the box
- Click on OK button to access your citation
- Follow instructions on Bibliographies & Citations page to finalize your references
Exporting from Gale eBooks
- On the right-hand side of the article, click on Cite
- Choose your preferred citation format
- Find RefWorks in the Export To menu under the full citation
- Select RefWorks
- Click option to export to the newest version of RefWorks
- Check off box Don't ask me this again
- Click on OK to access your citation
- Follow instructions on Bibliographies & Citations page to finalize your references
Exporting from JSTOR
- Click on Cite this Item
- Click on the Export to RefWorks option
- Check off box Don't ask me this again
- Click on OK button to access your citation
- Follow instructions on Bibliographies & Citations page to finalize your references
Exporting from Google Scholar
- Select the three bars in the top-right corner of your Google Scholar search
- Select Settings from the drop-down menu
- In the Bibliography Manager section, select RefWorks in the Show links to Import Citations into the drop-down menu
- Click on Save
- In the search, click the Cite button underneath the article you want to import to RefWorks
- Choose RefWorks from the options underneath the citation
- Select Export to New RefWorks
- Check off box Don't ask me this again
- You will then be redirected to your RefWorks page. Choose a folder to save your reference in, and access your article
- Follow instructions on Bibliographies & Citations page to finalize your references
Exporting from PubMed
Step 1: Exporting from PubMed
- Place a check next to the reference(s) you want to import
- Click the Send to Button
- Select Clipboard (NOT Citation Manager)
- You can add multiple batches of searches. PubMed will save your Clipboard items for 8 hours, even if you log out
- Open the Clipboard
- The Clipboard link is under the search bar. You can also access directly from the pop-up window that appears after you hit the Send to Button
- Click Save to save your citation to a file
- Select PubMed as the format. Click Create File
- The file will appear in the browser's download directory or at the bottom of your screen
Step 2: Importing into RefWorks
- Click the + (add) sign at the top left and choose Import references
- Go to the + Drop Files here or select a file from your computer section of the page
- Drag and drop the folder icon to that area or find the file in your downloads and drag and drop into the bar
- Citations will save into your Last Imported Folder
- Follow instructions on Bibliographies & Citations page to finalize your references
Using the Save to RefWorks Tool
- Install the Save to RefWorks tool
- Disable ad blockers and pop-up blockers in your browser
- Click on the Save to RefWorks Button
- A side panel will appear with the references on the page you are viewing
- Place a check in the box of the reference(s) you want to export
- Click on Save to RefWorks
- Click on Import
- Follow instructions on Bibliographies & Citations page to finalize your references
Exporting from Ovid
- On the search results page check the box next to the article(s) you want to export.
- Click on Export icon in the upper right-hand corner
- In the drop-down menu under Format, click on RefWorks
- Click on the Export button
- Select Export to New RefWorks
- Check off box Don't ask me this again
- Click on OK button to access your citation. (Note: You may get an intermediate window that says: The RefWorks application is displayed in a new browser window. Generally, this window opens on top of this page. If a second browser window has not launched, click this link to open the document.)
