RefWorks

A guide to using the citation manager RefWorks

Introduction

In addition to using the Save to RefWorks browser extension and directly exporting citation information from databases, RefWorks allows you to add reference directly into your RefWorks library.

To do so, log-in to RefWorks and click the “Add” button in the top right of the RefWorks Banner:

Using this button, you will be able to upload a document into RefWorks, import references from other citation managers or an RIS file, or create a new reference manually. The sections below provide instructions for creating a new reference manually and uploading documents into RefWorks. Instructions on importing references from other citation managers or an RIS File can be found on the Advanced Features page of this guide.

Uploading Documents into RefWorks

RefWorks enables you to drag and drop files or individually upload files into your RefWorks library. If you are uploading more than one document into RefWorks, RefWorks will create separate citations for each file uploaded, and it is likely more efficient to drag and drop a few files at once.

To drag and drop your files:

  1. Log-in to RefWorks
  2. If you are adding the documents into your general library, remain on the All Documents view. If you are adding the documents to a specific folder, select the folder you want to add documents to
  3. Click the Add button in the top-right corner of RefWork’s top banner
  4. Select Upload Files
  5. A window with the files on your device will open
  6. Select the file or files you want to upload
  7. Drag that file or files into your RefWorks library
  8. After the file uploads, review the record to ensure that RefWorks correctly read your file
