METRO Borrowing Privileges

Iona College Libraries participates in the Metropolitan New York Library Council (METRO), a nonprofit membership organization of libraries and library systems, located primarily in the five boroughs of New York City and Westchester County.

Iona College Libraries can assist researchers to locate materials onsite at METRO member libraries by supplying METRO referral cards. A METRO referral card allow an Iona patron to visit a METRO library which is not open to the general public. A METRO card does not allow borrowing privileges and METRO cards are not needed to visit libraries who are members of the WALDO consortium.

METRO Yellow Referral cards gives patrons access to individual titles from other METRO libraries. Yellow cards are issued only if the desired titled is not available at Iona College Libraries, other local libraries or via Inter-Library Loan. The host library will determine the period during which a patron may have access to the item. Yellow Cards do not give users unlimited access to another library's collections and does not guarantee that materials will be available at a given time. In most cases, access is limited to the specific item indicated on the Yellow Card.

METRO Blue Referral cards provide patrons with access to collections at participating METRO libraries. To participate, Faculty must verify the host library has a strong collection in your subject area and their library liaison will confirm if the library is a Blue Card program participant and determine if the library has placed restrictions on access to collections.  The host library determines the length of time that a user may have access to a collection.

The Blue Card does not give users unlimited access to another library's collections and does not guarantee that materials will be available at a given time. In most cases, access is limited to materials indicated on the Blue Card.

How many visits is a METRO card good for?

Only one visit is guaranteed. However, the host library may extend access privileges at their discretion. Researchers should ask about extensions when visiting the host library.

Faculty with questions about this service and/or to obtain a Metro card, please contact your Library Liaison, Administrators and Staff, please contact Natalka Sawchuk at nsawchuk@iona.edu.
