Artificial Intelligence: For Students
What is AI training?
Never enter private or confidential information into ChatGPT and similar tools. By default, ChatGPT and other AI tools, may use your data to improve its performance and capabilities. However, you have the option to prevent AI tools from using your data for this purpose.
Important: AI vendors revise policies and settings from day to day; changes to policies, options, and settings may occur at any time.
To ensure the integrity of your and Iona University data, review the Iona University Data Privacy Policy and the Iona University AI Use Policy.
What Does Training Mean
Just like humans learn from experience, AI learns from large amounts of data, including text from books, websites, articles, and more. AI analyzes this data during training to understand patterns, language structures, and various topics. Training helps the AI get better at understanding and generating human-like text. It learns to respond accurately and appropriately to different types of questions and conversations.
How your data is used to improve model performance (from OpenAI)
Why Training Uses Your Data
Sometimes, AI systems use real interactions (like your chats) to fine-tune and improve their responses. This makes the AI more useful, relevant, and accurate for future interactions.
Why Turning Off Training with your Data is Important
If you turn off training, your interactions will not be used to improve the AI. This helps maintain your privacy and control over your data.
Erasing AI Memory
Privacy and Security: When AI tools store memory, they might inadvertently retain personal, sensitive, or confidential user information. If not erased, this information could be misused, accessed by unauthorized entities, or result in data breaches.
Preventing Bias and Inaccuracy: AI tools that continuously store and learn from user interactions might develop biases based on limited or outdated information. Erasing memory could prevent AI from reinforcing potentially harmful patterns or assumptions and adapts to current and fresh information.
Ethical Concerns: Continuous memory retention can lead to ethical concerns, especially if users are unaware that their data is being stored indefinitely. Erasing memory ensures users retain control over what information is kept and used.
System Efficiency: Retaining large amounts of historical data can lead to inefficiencies, slowing down AI systems and consuming excessive storage or computational resources.
Retaining Memory: You may want to consider storing certain memory and chats for several reasons. Retaining chats can make them easier to access in the future if you want to go back and pick up a conversation where you left off or retrieve a piece of information from an AI tool. By retaining memory, the AI tool remembers any user-supplied insights that could prove helpful when formulating subsequent answers.
ChatGPT: Disable Training and Delete Memory
How to Disable Training: To turn off ChatGPT training on your data, follow these steps:
Step 1. Create or log into a ChatGPT account. Once logged in click on your initials in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
Step 2: From the drop down menu choose Settings.
Step 3: From the settings menu select Data Controls
Note: Improve the model for everyone is On. Sharing information to improve the model for everyone is the default. This means whatever you type into Chat GPT becomes part of the model.
Step 4: For data privacy reasons switch the data privacy model to Off by sliding the button to the left.
Step 5: Select Done once you have switched the Improve the Model for everyone to the off position.
Step 6: Close the screen by clicking on the x.
How to turn on Temporary Chat in ChatGPT
Step 1: Once logged in, at the top of the page, click on the menu that says “ChatGPT,”
Step 2: Click the option that says “temporary chat.”
With this setting your chat won’t appear in your history and ChatGPT won’t save anything from your conversation.
How to View and Delete Your ChatGPT Data (Memories)
To request ChatGPT to list your stored memories, follow these steps:
Initiate a Conversation by starting a new chat session with ChatGPT and ask ChatGPT to list all stored memories.
For example:
- "Can you list all the memories you have stored for me?"
- "Please show me all the data you have remembered from our previous sessions."
- "What information have you stored about me?"
ChatGPT will then provide you with a list of all the stored memories or data from your previous interactions for you to review and give you the option to remove them.
How to enable or disable memory
Step 1. Create or log into a ChatGPT account. Once logged in click on your initials in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
Step 2: From the drop down menu choose Settings.
Step 3: From the settings menu select Personalization
Step 4: You can turn Memory on or off at any time by toggling the Memory setting
Step 5: Select Clear ChatGPT's Memory if necessary
