 Some tips from article::

  • Get feedback on preliminary versions of the paper from non-experts
  • vital to maintain reader's confidence, which begins lower than in other audiences. Raise it at the start by reassuring reader that the article is designed for non-experts, and keep it high
  • Use as few technical terms as you can, and define them explicitly where they first appear; context is not enough
  • Use plenty of analogies; effective ones are always imagistic and made with things familiar to non-scientists
