Steps in the Research Process

1.       Choose and refine your topic

a.       Prepare a preliminary list of words, terms, phrases to search

2.       Obtain Background information

a.       Reference and basic texts  (click maroon tab above "Getting Started")

b.       Reference librarian can help identify suitable reference works

3.       Find other information sources

a.       Find books and multimedia  (click maroon tab above "Find Books & Multimedia" for more information)

b.      Find articles from journals, magazines and newspapers  (click gold tab above "Find Articles & Databases" for more informaton)

c.       Find internet resources  (click maroon tab above "Other Resources" for more information)

4.       Evaluate what you find  (hold your mouse over maroon tab above  "Other Resources", and then click link "Evaluating Information Sources" which appears underneath)

5.       Cite what you use

a.       Purpose of citations

b.      Citation styles

TIP: Always check bibliography and/or footnotes of helpful books, articles, and other resources you find. Remember, one good source often leads you to other good sources, whether books, articles, internet sources, multimedia, and more!
