Understanding Writing Assignments

The Purdue Online Writing Lab (Purdue OWL) is a website that provides free guidelines and rules on a variety of research topics, including understanding writing assignment and how to format and reference your papers using both MLA, APA, and Chicago styles. It is an excellent resource at your fingertips.

  • The section, Understanding Writing Assignmentsfrom Purdue OWL describes some steps you can take to better understand the requirements of your writing assignments. After  taking these steps, if the assignment is still unclear, contact your professor. You may stop by the Reference Desk in the Library also.
  • Read the very helpful section on the writing process: pre-writing (invention), developing research questions and outlines, composing thesis statements, and proofreading.

You can also go to the Rudin Center for assistance in writing your paper and citing sources or stop by the  Reference Desk in Ryan Library.
